Removable SCSI Hard Drive Bay and Case - in Excellent Condition
This is a high-end Bay-and-Case that lets you transform a standard SCSI hard drive into a removable drive. It is dedicated to SCSI hard drives that use a 68pin high-density connector. It is made of high-quality cast aluminum material both for the tray and the fixed frame (not plastic).
The Bay-and-Case features a single chip microprocessor. This micro peforms several functions including monitoring the hard disk temperature and driving an additional fan to regulate the temperature. There are two fans on this unit, one in front and one in the back. The micro also controls the front-panel LCD which displays SCSI ID, MTBF Hour and Day, 5v and 12 v power monitoring and display, and drive temperature monitoring and display. The internal power and temperature are montiored.
Features
- High-quality cast aluminum construction
- Embedded Micro-processor controlled
- LCD Display shows the following...
- Real time clock, 12 hour format with AM or PM display
- SCSI ID as a digital number
- Fan operation indicator, which is an icon of a spinning fan controlled by the micro
- Drive Temperature
- +5v and +12v voltage reading (alternates showing one then the other)
- Monitor and Alarm Sounding for...
- Drive Temperature too high
- +5volt power supply out-of-range
- +12volt power supply out-of-range
- Diplay of MTBF (Mean-Time-Between-Failures) Hours and Days whenever an Alarm condition occurs
An internal buzzer can be made to sound-off when
- The +5 volt is either 0%, 5% or 10% too high or too low
- The +12 volt is either 05, 5% or 10% too high or too low
- The drive temperture is is equal or above an "Alarm Temperture" that you can set
Here is how the Bay-and Case are used...
- Mount your SCSI, 68pin hard drive in the Removable Case. Internal to the case are
- A 68pin SCSI cable you connect to the 68 pin connector on the back of the SCSI drive
- A 4 pin molex power cable to connect to the drive's power connector
- A 2x5 position cable to connect to the SCSI drive's option connector. SCSI drives generally have a 2x5 pin header that you use to configure the drive, i.e. to set the SCSI address. This 2x5 position cable is made to plug into your drive's connector. This is so you can set the SCSI ID from the front panel of the Removable Case
- There is a sensor in the Case that measures the temperature of the drive.
- Install the Removable Bay in a 5.25" You mount the bay in a 5.25" opening of your computer. On the back of the Removable Bay is:
- A 68pin SCSI connector you use to connect the Removable Bay to your internal SCSI cable.
- A standard molex 4 pin power connector that you connect to one of your computer's internal power cable.
- Now you can slide the Removable Case (that has your hard drive inside) into the Removable Bay. When you press down on the Case handle, it latches the Removable Case in place. You can also lock the Case into the Bay if you want to (with the supplied key) to prevent others from removing the drive.
- On the front of the Remoable Case is an LCD display and several buttons. You use the buttons to configure the Case and the LCD display is used to monitor the drive.
The buttons on the Removable Case allow you to do the following:
- Set the SCSI ID of the Drive.
- You press the buttons to display the current ID, and to increase or decrease the number. This is a Digital display showing the SCSI ID number
- Set an "Alarm Temperature".
- The internal micro inside the Removable Case continusouly montiors the drive temperature using a sensor that is built into the Removable Case. Using the front buttons, you can set an "Alarm Temperature". When the the drive reaches this "Alarm Temperature", the Removable Case will emit a continuous Beeping sound to alert you of the high temperature so you can take the appropriate action. This is done by comparing the "Alarm Temperature" that you set to the actual temperature of the drive which is continuously measured by the Case's internal temperature sensor. The Removable case has two fans, one in front and one in the back. The internal micro will regulate the fans to keep the drives cool - but if something goes wrong and things start to heat up, the alarm will sound. This just provides an additional level of monitoring to keep your data safe.
- Set voltage montoring mode.
- With the buttons on the front, you can select 0%, 5% or 10% voltage monitoring. The micro monitors both the +5v and +12v voltage. For example, if you select the 10% mode, then the Removable Case will alert you with a continuous Beeping sound when either of the voltages is higher or lower than 10%. This means it will alert you when the +5v is outside the acceptable range of +4.5 to +5.5 and the +12v is outside the acceptable range of +10.8v to +13.2v.
- Clear the MTBF Hr and Day.
- When an error occurs, either from temperture too hot or voltages outside of the accpetable range, the mirco will record the length of time of the error condition in Hours and Days and displays this on the LCD. This way if you are not around to hear the alarm buzzer, you can see on the display if something has happened. The front buttons allows you to clear the error display.
- Set the time-of-day clock
- The LCD displays a time-of-day clock. To set the clock to the correct time, you use the front buttons to select the hour, minute and AM or PM setting
Condition
These units are used, but in excellent condition and complete with the Bay, Case and key. We are the original owners of these units. We purchased them to use in our own misson-critical servers. We reduced the number of servers, and therefore took these out of service. They are very clean and like new condition and fully operational.
